The Chestnut Youth Group seeks to provide a caring and supportive program where all youth grades 6-12 feel welcome. Our Youth Group strives to provide opportunities for growth through our learning, social, and service activities. Descriptions of just a few of the activities are provided below. They include not just opportunities for fun and fellowship, such as ski trips and retreats, but also service projects such as Harvest of Hope. The group meets weekly throughout the year, on Sunday nights at the church.

Sunday Night Youth Group
6:30–8 p.m.
A fun evening that consists of games or other social activity, followed by a Bible-based devotion or lesson and dessert and fellowship time.

Harvest of Hope Retreat
Weekend retreat where youth glean fruits or vegetables for local food pantries or shelters. Youth are taught about hunger in the United States and throughout the world.

York River District Retreat
There are two weekend retreats that Chestnut youth attend, one in the fall and one in the spring. Both include worship music, Bible-based lessons, and small group activities. Chestnut youth have the opportunity to interact with youth from other churches throughout the York River District.

Bibles on the Beach
A chance to socialize, play games, have devotion and a brief lesson, capped off by ice cream. Meets at the church at 6:30 p.m., and from there participants travel by church bus to Yorktown Beach. Wednesdays through the summer.

Summer Project Youth (SPY)
This year CMUMC sent 16 youths and their adult chaperones on a mission to Christiansburg, VA. SPY is coordinated by Fieldstone UMC and according to their website is "a week-long mission adventure for middle and high school students & adults." The youth get hands-on experience "making homes safer, warmer and drier for families in the New River Valley." Back in July they painted, cleaned and prepped a property on BettyMae Mountain.  The mission trip is led by college-age students and there are pastor-led worship services on Sunday morning and evening.

Youth Lock-in
Another fun and adventurous chance to join in fellowship and fun. There's a pool party, followed by games, an evening meal and devotional, and then more games and a sleepover at the church. Adult-supervised. An annual event held in the summer, most recently in June.
