Spring Break, Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter

April is an exciting and busy month. Spring is in the air. Taking a Spring Break to get away from school and work to enjoy the warm weather and to catch up on rest and relaxation from our everyday routines is something wonderful if it can happen for you. But April is also one of the most important times for Christians everywhere. Our Lenten Journeys are leading to Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday, Apr. 21. Chestnut has a special children’s chimes processional in the works to lead the Children’s Palm Processional on Palm Sunday. Special violin and cello solos are being worked on for Holy Thursday. The Chancel Choir is preparing “Lamb of God” Lenten Cantata for the Good Friday Evening Service. Beth Walker is working on a soprano vocal solo from Handel’s Messiah for Easter Sunday and the choir will festively sing the “Hallelujah Chorus” also to celebrate Easter.

The Lenten Cantata “Lamb of God” for Good Friday tells the story of Christ’s last days and final hours of suffering on the cross through meaningful music and narrations. It is amazing that Jesus told it all to the disciples before it happened: “And when Jesus and his disciples were on the road going up to Jerusalem, Jesus was walking ahead of them, and they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying ‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will arise.’ But they understood none of these things; this say ing was hid from them, and they did not grasp what was said.” (Mark 10:32-34,Luke 18:34) It is our hope and prayer that you and your family will experience the joy of Easter!

Upcoming in May: Children’s Choirs Present “Moses and the Freedom Fanatics” Musical Drama on Wednesday, May 8th. It is a musical drama for young voices about the Exodus. The entire action takes place on the steps of Pharaoh's palace which has been built by the slaves. Pharaoh is portrayed as a laughable, bungling, prissy king whose power slowly slips away. He may speak clutching his Teddy bear. The musical opens with the slaves marching in a demonstration for freedom. They are carrying placards on which are written phrases such as: HAPPINESS IS BEING FREE; FREEDOM NOW! KING TUT—SO WHAT!; DOWN WITH MUD PITS; THE PROMISED LAND OR BUST.
